Summer Residencies: The River
Charlotte Street Arts Centre Penny Gallery
Opening October 12, 4:30-6:00
The Fredericton Arts Alliance (FAA) is pleased to present an exhibition of works done by our 2018 Artists in Residence. For nearly 20 years, the program has created opportunities for residents and visitors alike to engage personally with the arts and artists. It enriches the downtown cultural experience while paying artists to experience studio residencies.
The program teams up artists, two at a time, to share an open studio in the historic Garrison district for one or more week-long residencies. Artists have included painters, weavers, ceramists, writers, musicians, sculptors and more. Applicants are selected by an independent jury, and are asked to reflect on a specific theme during their residency. This year’s theme was the Wolastoq/Saint John River, and its place in our lives, past, present, or future. While they pursue the specific creative initiative, artists are asked to engage with the public and display some of their work so that visitors can see their current projects in a broader context.
The Fredericton Arts Alliance is grateful for financial support from the City of Fredericton and Downtown Fredericton, and to the Charlotte Street Arts Centre for the use of this gallery space, as well Charlotte Simmons (our 2018 summer student who administered the program), our 2018 artists, and everyone who visited the studio.
This exhibit features the work of seven of the 14 artists who had residencies this year.
